The Foundation
HnR bred Thoroughbreds for eighteen years. Three mares acquired between 2009 and 2014 form the core of the record: Kindle, bought for $50,000 as a yearling at Keeneland September; Be Envied, bought for $37,000 in foal at Keeneland November; and Living the Life (IRE), bought privately in England for about $43,000. Their produce sold for $2.9 million at public auction.
Kindle was consigned by Lane’s End to the 2009 Keeneland September sale as Hip 1803. She won four races and $243,370, placed in four graded stakes, and became the cornerstone mare of the program.
Be Envied was bought at the 2011 Keeneland November sale in foal to City Zip. HnR intended to breed her next to Silver Train, its own winner of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Metropolitan Handicap, who was standing at Northview-PA. That is why she was based in Pennsylvania and why the filly she was carrying was foaled a Pennsylvania-bred. Silver Train died of colic in December 2013. The filly was Finest City, who won the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita and was named champion female sprinter at that year’s Eclipse Awards.
Living the Life (IRE) was bought privately in England in early 2014 with one maiden win to her name. She won the inaugural All-Weather Fillies’ & Mares’ Championship at Lingfield in her last British start, then the Presque Isle Downs Masters (G2) in 2014 and 2015 and the All American (G3) against males, and retired with $1,028,394 from 35 starts.

Produce figures are what HnR was paid at public auction for these mares’ foals, plus Grand Prix, a daughter of Be Envied sold as a broodmare. They do not include what those horses later earned or resold for in other hands, such as Finest City’s $1,266,394 in purses and $1,500,000 resale, or Allah Maak’s $2,200,000.
The band was larger than those three. Randie’s Legend, Sulis, Halljoy (IRE), Walking Path, Laseen (IRE), Canary Diamond and others produced for HnR, and the operation sold stock at Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton in almost every year from 2012 to 2024.
Be Envied by Lemon Drop Kid
Finest City was offered as a weanling at the 2012 Keeneland November sale, where presale radiographs showed a cyst-type shadow, and she sold at her reserve for $50,000 to Cobra Farm. She sold again as a yearling the following September for $85,000 to Eric Kruljac, agent for Seltzer Thoroughbreds, who campaigned her for the rest of her career under trainer Ian Kruljac. She won the Great Lady M (G2) in a track record, the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, and the Santa Monica (G2). She retired with $1,266,394 from 20 starts and sold to Katsumi Yoshida’s Shadai Group for $1,500,000 at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton November sale. She is one of four Pennsylvania-breds to win a Breeders’ Cup race, with Alphabet Soup, Go for Wand, and Tikkanen. Her full record.
Grand Prix, a Tale of the Cat filly and Finest City’s half-sister, was foaled a Pennsylvania-bred in April 2014. She was offered as a weanling at Keeneland November that November and as a yearling at Keeneland September in 2015 without meeting her reserve either time. HnR kept her and raced her under trainer Ben Colebrook. She won the New Start Stakes at Penn National and the Dr. Teresa Garofalo Memorial Stakes at Parx in 2017, placed in the Golden Gate Debutante and the Minaret Stakes at Tampa Bay, and retired with four wins and $225,996 from 18 starts. Ballysax Bloodstock consigned her to Fasig-Tipton November in 2021, where David Campbell bought her for $600,000.
Kindle by Indian Charlie
Kindle was moved to Kentucky to be bred there, on the reasoning that regional sires do not sell. Every foal she produced was bred by HnR. Her full record.
Made in America, by Tiznow, was her first foal and the only one HnR kept and raced. He won three of six starts and $112,010, all three wins at Turfway Park, the last the Forego Stakes in January 2021.
Allah Maak, by American Pharoah, was her second. Kindle was among the HnR mares to get a season to American Pharoah in his first book. The colt sold as a weanling at Keeneland November for $400,000 to Peter O’Callaghan of Cavalier Bloodstock, who resold him eleven months later as Hip 91 of the 2018 Keeneland September sale, where Godolphin bought him for $2,200,000. He topped the opening session and was the first yearling of that sale to break seven figures. He never raced.
Palazzi, by Pioneerof the Nile, was bred in partnership with the Pioneerof the Nile Syndicate and sold for $510,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga in 2019. He won the Pattison Singspiel Stakes (G3) at Woodbine and the bet365 Eclipse Stakes (G2) on the Woodbine Tapeta and has earned more than $580,000. He is eight and still in training.
A Day to Remember, a second American Pharoah colt, sold for $300,000 at Keeneland September in 2022 to My Racehorse and Muir Hut Stables.
Living the Life (IRE) by Footstepsinthesand
Living the Life produced the highest weanling prices in the operation’s history. Silver Blur, by Tapit, sold for $300,000 at Fasig-Tipton Select in 2020. A Justify colt sold for $285,000 at Fasig-Tipton November in 2022. A second Justify colt, Hannothenavigator, sold for $450,000 through the same sale in 2024. Her full record.
Living Magic, the 2021 Justify filly, was retained and raced. She won three of ten starts and $222,917, taking the Listed Chelsey Flower and the Listed My Dear at two, and retired to the HnR broodmare band.
The 2022 Justify colt was named Appeared. Coolmore campaigned him in Europe, where he won a maiden over twelve furlongs at the Curragh for Aidan O’Brien. Darby Racing bought him and sent him to Australia with trainer Bjorn Baker, and HnR took an interest in him there. He is the horse that led HnR into Australian racing.
Randie’s Legend
Randie’s Legend never raced. She produced five horses that went through public auction. Daddy Is a Legend, by Scat Daddy, sold as a weanling for $140,000 at Keeneland November in 2015 to Cavalier Bloodstock and became a multiple graded stakes winner of more than $660,000. Party Line Vote, by Tiznow, sold for $180,000 at Keeneland November in 2018. Night Music, by Candy Ride, sold for $235,000 at Fasig-Tipton November in 2019. An American Pharoah colt sold for $300,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale to M.V. Magnier. Horvath, by Munnings, went through Keeneland September in 2024 and races for HnR today.
Halljoy (IRE) by Halling
Halljoy produced Envied, a 2018 American Pharoah filly HnR bred and later bought back as a broodmare for $220,000 at Keeneland November in 2022. Halljoy also produced Two More Shots, who sold for $20,000 in 2021, and a Practical Joke colt who sold for $50,000 at Keeneland September in 2024.
Sulis by Maria’s Mon
Sulis produced Conquest Slayer, by Scat Daddy, who sold for $130,000 as a weanling in 2014, and California Daddy, also by Scat Daddy, who sold for $220,000 in 2016. She also produced Lemon Smile, Bavaria, and Huntingcoco.
The Rest of the Band
Walking Path, Karakorum Fugitive, Canary Diamond, Chestnut Cabaret, Fly Down Too, Move, Macaabra (IRE), Laseen (IRE), and Grateful also produced for HnR. Laseen’s Justify filly Ms Sedona sold for $300,000 at Keeneland September in 2022. Fielder, a Sidney’s Candy colt out of Karakorum Fugitive, was a Pennsylvania-bred stakes winner who earned $545,470 from 72 starts racing for other owners.
